Phrase to Broad Match Ratio has become a familiar term within Keyword Research Analysis because it is now included as a filtering option in specialist Internet Marketing software. I know seasoned keyword researchers will gleefully boast that they have been using their own particular equation for manually analysing keyword strength for years, but, just as the calculator overrides the abacus, software dismisses brain power, and they only have to get results with these specialist software once for them to be converted. Why? Simply because of the time they save. A calculation that manually took hours for each probable keyword is reduced to seconds within modern software. And that is not per keyword, that is for a whole keyword list.
Before any thought of calculating the Phrase To Broad Match Ratio (PBR) the researcher will have secured a list of long-tailed keywords, filtered out many that are unrelated and unwanted, and be faced with a list of words that seem probable. Probable that is in the sense that they may or may not attract Google to include their site on page one of its findings. And probable in the sense that Google searchers might be attracted to visit their site.

In Parts One to Three of this series I mentioned how useful the Google Keyword Research Tool was for generating lists of long-tailed keywords and how new developments in software such as Market Samurai had superseded the Google Tool introducing so many long awaited utilities that keyword research had now become a science. Part Four explains this theory.
To understand the why and how keyword research moved from a simple list of long-tailed keywords into the realms of a science can be best explained by reviewing one of the strategies, or techniques, found in Market Samurai ‘s own Keyword Research Tool.
But before I do that please stop for a moment and think about useful keywords. Ask the question, why they are useful? What makes them useful? And remember that the word keyword now includes long-tailed keywords.

Words are Key for Advertising
For words to be effective in internet marketing the words themselves have to be the very ones searchers use to find the sites, services and products they seek. This is how and why the words used by search engine users get to be called keywords. They literally are words that are “key” to the search. The Internet marketer and advertiser use this information as a tactic to spearhead their advertising campaigns. They search for the words search engine users use when searching, analyse which words are likely to attract searchers to their advertisements and sales pages, and include those words in their text. Now the process has been reversed, with the search term being “key” to the advertising. Hence the term - keyword.

It was only two years ago I heard people marvelling at the Google Keyword Research Tool but how soon expectations change. At that time many people considered the statistics that they were able to uncover using Google’s Keyword Research Tool were pretty enlightening, but in reality they were also extremely limiting.
One area Google was kind enough to advise on was the number of searches for particular words carried out on a “local” basis, and on a global basis. “Local” refered to the country the viewer was in at that time. But for a lot of people this was of little use because it was the marketing power of the United States of America, Great Britain, Australia and Europe which they required information on.
Limitations within the Google Keyword Tool
But they were able to see how many searches were carried out which did give a clue of the popularity of certain subjects. However, having a clue about the popularity of certain words was of little value to a marketer if they had no idea of the number of sites using that word or words to attract customers. This information was available to them using Google but they had to implement a search in the Google Search Engine to discover it. This information wasn’t available to them within the Google Keyword Research Tool. And the search results that came back didn’t actually show the number of competing websites, it showed the number of web pages containing those words, and frequently in any order too. Hardly reliable information.
And so, from this frustration, software, such as Market Samurai, was born. And, as I write this, I believe Market Samurai to be unique. It is tempting now to go off into several paragraphs advertising the virtues of Market Samurai but it doesn’t help the student to understand keyword research any better to do that.

Part One of this series looking at Keyword Research concentrated on explaining to the student that keywords were not difficult to understand once the student realised that they were simply the words search engine users began their searches with. The student was then encouraged to take a look at the information the Google Keyword Research Tool could produce with particular emphasis on the large number of additional words it produced.
Part Two introduced the “long-tailed keyword” and suggested that whilst the Google Keyword Research Tool could produce these the limitations of the tool had led to other software being developed and that Market Samurai was the front-runner.
In this article the Google Keyword Research Tool, other than for purposes of comparison with Market Samurai, becomes superfluous to our needs. It’s not so much that it’s not suitable or that it is hopeless, but it is a case of it cannot do enough. And why use something that has limitations when an alternative not only does not have those limitations but also makes Keyword Research fun.
